We wanted to share a fun event that is happening this weekend, February 18th-21st, 2022
Great Backyard Bird Count 2022 πͺΆπ¦π¦ποΈπ¦
CornellLab, Audubon, and Birds Canada are running this global event. For the four days in February, the world is coming together for the love of birds. The observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. This year it is a celebration of coming together for 25 years to watch, learn about, count, and celebrate birds. π¦πͺΆπ¦
You may be asking how do I participate? It is an easy and fun thing to do, it can be done anywhere you find birds.
How to participate:
-Decide where you will watch the birds. Watch the birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once over the 4 days. Multiple days/times in the 4 days is also welcomed.
- Count all the birds you see or hear within your planned location and time period. Enter your findings either on Merlin Bird ID app, eBird Mobile app or eBird website.
-As per birdcount.org, Merlin Bird ID app is recommended if you are new to the Great Backyard Bird Count. It is free and easy to use. You can get more information about both apps or website https://www.birdcount.org/participate/
-A downloadable printable checklist for birds found in your area can be found on www.birdcount.org
A fun app you may want to check out is, BirdNET. It can help you identify bird sounds. You can record a bird sound/song and BirdNET can help you correctly identify the possible bird species in your recording. BirdNET is a joint project of the Cornell Lab Ornithology and the Chemnitz University of Technology. https://birdnet.cornell.edu/
We hope you have fun and good luck with the Great Backyard Bird Count. Happy birding! π¦π¦
